 HAIR, SKIN & NAILS FORMULA

Hair, nails and the outermost layer of skin, are composed of varying amounts of the proteins keratin, collagen and elastin plus a range of vitamins and minerals. Keratin causes a thickening of tissues, while collagen has a high tensile strength. They are abundant in harder tissue such as hair and
nail. Hair and nail also have more 'inorganic' substances, such as the minerals silica and calcium. Skin needs to stretch, therefore it contains more elastin.

Hair, skin and nails health are influenced by the levels of toxins present in the body and can be considered a reflection of general health. For example, people with poor bowel or liver function often suffer conditions such as itching skin, psoriasis or acne.

The Skin - consists of the epidermis (the outer layer) and the dermis (inner layer). The epidermis consists of four sub-layers, which progress from germinative (growing) cells at its innermost points, to dead cells, which have had their nuclei replaced by keratin, at the surface. The dermis is regarded
as the 'true' skin. It is a thick layer of living tissue beneath the epidermis, made of connective tissue, and containing blood vessels, lymph vessels, sweat glands and ducts, nerve endings, sebaceous glands, smooth muscle fibres and hair follicles.

The Hair - is a highly keratinised tissue. The part above the skin consists of three parts, an outer cuticle, a cortex, which contains the pigment, and the central medulla. The root below the skin surface, begins with a bulb which produces the new cells which are pushed upwards, becoming increasingly keratinised to form the root and shaft.

The Nail - almost entirely composed of keratin, nail tissue is an extension of the skin epidermis on the fingers and toes. The root is the hidden part of the nail, which is supplied by the germinative cells by the skin dermis. The visible nail body grows as those cells slide along the nail bed.

Ingredients to nourish and strengthen the hair, skin & nail structures

Antioxidants and ingredients for growth and pigmentation

MSM, Kelp and Aloe Vera to nourish and detoxify

MSM (500mg) - Connects the long proteins in tissues together for strength. Sulphur is used by the liver to detoxify chemicals, a process called sulphation.

Silica (50mg) - Helps in the distribution of calcium around the body. Helps make and maintain connective tissue. Provides hardness to brittle nails and hair that breaks easily.

Aloe Vera extract (25mg, equivalent to 5000mg juice) - Contains Omega 6 EFAs and mucins to hydrate the skin and dry, brittle nails. Rich in amino acids, vitamins C and E and zinc.

Kelp (50mg) - Full of minerals and trace elements to supplement the rest of the formula. A product often used during detox diets. Well publicised for improving the health and growth of hair.

Vitamin E (20mg) - Trials show that, with vitamin C, helps protect against UV damage to skin. Contributes to connective tissue development.

Vitamin C (1 OOmg) - Works with vitamin E for UV protection for skin. Helps to make collagen. Helps to form liver bile (to remove toxins) and detoxifies alcohol.

Blotin (100mcg) - Improves thickness of the nail.

Calcium (200mg) - Restores hardness to soft nails.

Zinc - Needed to synthesise protein. Commonly deficient in the diet. Effective for contact dermatitis (rashes), acne and patchy hair loss.

Copper (2mg) - Needed for the production of pigment in skin. Needed for the synthesis of collagen. Manganese (15mg) • Needed for formation of cartilage-rich tissues,

Contra-indications / Precautions

People with hypercalcaemia (high blood calcium) and kidney disease should avoid this supplement unless otherwise advised by a doctor. Prostate cancer patients should avoid calcium. Kelp should be avoided by those with thyroid disease. A blood glucose lowering effect has been reported for Aloe Vera and so should be avoided in diabetes. Vitamin C supplementation is not advisable for people
who suffer with kidney stones or those with iron overload (haemosiderosis or haemochromatosis).
Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
